Who Runs Walmart’s Gas Stations
Here is a fact that surprises a lot of shoppers: the fuel station in the Walmart parking lot usually is not run by Walmart. Most of those pumps belong to Murphy USA and its Murphy Express stores, which have sat on Walmart lots for years under a long-running co-location deal, with fuel flowing through Murphy’s own supply network. Walmart has also been building a newer generation of its own branded fuel-and-convenience stops as it revamps its stores. Either way, the draw is the same: some of the lowest posted prices around, which is exactly why the lots stay busy.
The Walmart+ Fuel Discount
The real reason to care about “Walmart gas” is the Walmart+ membership discount. Walmart+ costs about $12.95 a month or $98 a year, and one of its headline perks is up to 10 cents off per gallon at more than 14,000 fuel stations nationwide. For drivers who fill up regularly, the fuel savings alone can offset a good chunk of the membership fee, on top of the free shipping and delivery perks the membership is better known for. It is Walmart’s direct answer to warehouse-club fuel pricing without needing to drive to a club.
Where the Walmart+ Discount Works
The discount reaches far beyond Walmart’s own lots. The biggest piece is a partnership with Exxon and Mobil, which added roughly 12,000 stations where members save 10 cents per gallon (a little less in a few states like Alabama and Oklahoma). On top of that, members save 5 to 10 cents per gallon at Walmart and Murphy stations depending on local fuel laws, and they can even unlock member fuel prices at select Sam’s Club stations without holding a separate Sam’s Club membership. That combination is what pushes the network past 14,000 locations.
Is Walmart Gas Top Tier?
Walmart’s own fuel and the Murphy USA stations on its lots are not on the TOP TIER licensed brands list. The gasoline meets all federal and state standards and runs fine in any engine built for regular unleaded, but it does not carry the higher Top Tier detergent level. There is a useful loophole, though: since the Walmart+ discount also works at Exxon and Mobil, and their Synergy fuel is Top Tier, a member who wants Top Tier gas can take the same savings to an Exxon or Mobil pump instead.
How to Claim the Discount at the Pump
You redeem through the Walmart app rather than a card swipe. Open the app, choose the fuel option, tap “Pay at Pump,” scan the QR code on the pump screen, pick your payment method in Walmart Pay, select your grade, and the member price is applied automatically. Because participating brands and exact discounts vary a little by state and by station, it is worth confirming a specific location honors the deal before you rely on it.
